Fernando Verdasco and Milos Raonic take the court on opening day at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris Bercy.
Fernando Verdasco vs. Marin Cilic
In one of the better match-ups in the first round, Spaniard Fernando Verdasco will take on Croatia’s Marin Cilic. Verdasco is the lower ranked at No. 23, but he holds a slight 3-2 lifetime edge over Cilic.
Based on current form, world No. 18 Cilic will be the firm favorite coming into the match. Verdasco has struggled mightily this fall. He made the quarters in Beijing, but he played a dismal match in Shanghai which saw him dispatched in the second round at the hands of veteran countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero.
By contrast, Cilic won the title in St. Petersburg; he lost in the second round in Valencia, but that probably helps his cause in Paris because he isn’t as likely to suffer fatigue.
Prediction – Cilic in straight sets.
Milos Raonic vs. Julien Benneteau
Canadian Milos Raonic had a great start to the 2011 season. The world No. 29 spent much of the middle of the season sidelined with injury and surgery. He’s had varying results this fall, from a semifinal showing in Stockholm to a first round ouster at the hands of Marin Cilic in Valencia last week.
Raonic will take on Julien Benneteau, the Frenchman ranked 54 in the world. Benneteau has had his best results on the Challenger circuit. He will have the backing of the French crowd no doubt, but Raonic will be well-rested having lost early last week.
Prediction – Raonic in straight sets.
