A first-round matchup in Paris on Monday pits Nikolay Davydenko against Andreas Seppi. The winner will go up against Nicolas Almagro in round two.
Veterans Nikolay Davydenko and Andreas Seppi will be squaring off for the first time in more than three years when they clash during first-round action at the BNP Paribas Masters on Sunday.
They have faced each other four times overall, with Davydenko having won three in a row to lead the head-to-head series 3-1. The Russian won their only previous hard-court meeting at the 2005 Metz event and he most recently prevailed 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on the clay courts of Poertschach three seasons ago.
Seppi has not lost in a first round since the U.S. Open, a streak of four ATP events. The 46th-ranked Italian is an even 23-23 at the ATP level this year and is coming off a round-two loss in Basel to eventual runner-up Kei Nishikori. Seppi enjoyed a strong weekend already in Paris, taking out Marc Gicquel and Sam Querrey to qualify for the main draw.
Davydenko's 25-24 record is almost identical to that of Seppi. The world No. 36 is slowing down at 30 years old, but he has quietly been decent of late. Davydenko has reached at least the quarterfinals of three events since the U.S. Open, including the quarterfinals last week in Valencia and a semifinal last month in Moscow.
This will be a battle between consistent baseline players, but Davydenko has more firepower off the ground and he should be able to exploit his opponent's relatively weak serve with a stellar return game. Dayvdenko in three sets is the pick.
