A place in the final will be at stake when David Ferrer goes up against Juan Monaco on Saturday in Valencia. The winner will battle either Juan Martin Del Potro or Marcel Granollers for the title.
David Ferrer and Juan Monaco will be squaring off for the seventh time in their careers when they do battle in the Valencia Open semifinals on Saturday night.
The head-to-head series is tied up at three apiece, with five of their six encounters having come on clay. Their only hard-court meeting was staged at the 2007 Sony Ericsson Open, where Ferrer dominated 6-2, 6-2. They most recently faced each other earlier this season in Acapulco, with Ferrer prevailing 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Monaco, who beat Ferrer in 2004, 2005, and 2009, will be hard-pressed to avenge his February setback. Ferrer is at home in Spain, is the part-owner of this event, and is in outstanding form to boot. The No. 1 seed and world No. 5 boasts an awesome 54-15 for the season after routine wins this week over Fernando Verdasco, Vasek Pospisil, and Nikolay Davydenko. He is 11-2 since the U.S. Open.
This won't be easy for Ferrer, though, because Monaco is playing well and making a late push for an Australian Open seed. After upsetting Nicolas Almagro in round one, the 41st-ranked destroyed both Fabio Fognini and Juan Carlos Ferrero. Monaco is now a respectable 27-24 for his 2011 campaign and he has ended in a four-match losing streak that started in round four of the U.S. Open.
The problem for the underdog is that he won't be able to make this anything but a baseline battle--and Ferrer rarely loses those. With home-court advantage, look for the favorite to advance in straight sets.
