• Del Potro takes on Granollers in Valencia semifinals

    11/5/11 2:05 AM | Ricky Dimon
Del Potro takes on Granollers in Valencia semifinals Juan Martin Del Potro and Marcel Granollers will square off during semifinal action on Saturday in Valencia. The winner books a meeting for the title with either David Ferrer or Juan Monaco.

Something will have to give when Juan Martin Del Potro and Marcel Granollers go head-to-head for the first time in their careers in the Valencia Open semifinals on Saturday. Del Potro is playing stellar tennis at the end of the season but Granollers is borderline unbeatable at this event.

After a lackluster U.S. Open Series, Del Potro is heating up indoors and putting himself in distant World Tour Finals contention. The 14th-ranked Argentine finished runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga last week in Vienna and is not showing any signs of slowing down. He has not come close to dropping set with routine wins in Valencia over Dmitry Tursunov, Kevin Anderson, and Sam Querrey.

Granollers has been decent all year long, but he is never better than he is in Valencia. The 34th-ranked Spaniard is 14-3 lifetime (including qualifying) at this event. He reached the final in 2010 and is one win away from accomplishing the same feat this time around after scoring three straight upset wins over Alexandr Dolgopolov, Marin Cilic, and Gael Monfils.

Del Potro has the edge in current form and has been dominant through three matches. He should be the fresher of the two, as well, because Granollers has endured two straight three-setters and he seemed to sprain an ankle late against Monfils. Granollers, however, has home-court advantage and is a miracle-worker in Valencia.

Count on a three-setter, with a slight edge going to Del Potro.

And dear little Granollers wins! Haven't I been telling youse all how well he's been playing :)

deuce, I didn't get to watch it. I do know how well Granollers can play at the net. I saw last year's final between him and Ferrer. He has been playing doubles regularly and so I'm not surprised by his good net game. He also plays in the doubles for Spain's DC, when one of Lopez or Verdasco is not available. I'm so happy for him that this year he has improved his rankings so much, from 50+ to 30+. Good for Spain too, as they've one more new member for their DC team. In fact Granollers was one of Rafa's junior Davis Cup team mates and they won the junior DC title one year.

Heh heh, so georgous boy Cilic fared better than Delpo against Granollers, at least Marin won the first set and pushed Granollers to three sets. In fact Marin has chances to win but he went away half way through the match. Marin moves better than Delpo and can handle Granollers net game better, as Marin is also good at the net. Delpo's problem is still his movement and that's why I think Granollers with his kind of game has a good chance of beating Delpo.

I saw the replay of this match on the tennis channel. Where has this guy Granollers been? I have heard of him, but haven't seen him play. Who knew? So nice to see this young man playing this kind of tennis. Great touch at net!

I wasn't sure if Delpo was really injured or not. One never knows with him. He didn't seem like himself, but part of the credit goes to Granollers.

I guess you knew something that we didn't! Well done!
