With two Swiss players still in the tournament, the crowds in Basel have plenty to cheer about, but Stanislas Wawrinka will have to get through Florian Mayer to remain in the tournament.
Germany’s Florian Mayer is undoubtedly having his break out year in 2011. The world No. 22 had the biggest win of his career to date with a victory over Rafael Nadal in Shanghai a few weeks ago. Mayer also adds the title in Bucharest to his list of accomplishments.
At No. 19 in the world, Stanislas Wawrinka isn’t ranked much higher than his opponent. He has a win over Mayer in their only other meeting, but that was in 2006 when Mayer wasn’t enjoying the kind of form he has today.
Wawrinka will have the benefit of a packed house on his side, but Mayer’s form makes him a danger. The German for the upset.

Mayer was a shadow of the player we saw in Shanghai and Stan simply neutralised his game.
