11/4/11 4:03 AM | Cheryl Murray
The Basel quarterfinals will feature familiar foes Roger Federer and Andy Roddick, who meet for the 23rd time.
Andy Roddick is well accustomed to losing at the hands of Roger Federer. The Swiss man has won all but 2 of their meetings, once in 2003 at the Montreal Masters and once in 2008 at the Miami Masters. Even when the American has gotten close, such as the 2009 Wimbledon final, Federer has found a way to win.
This might just be Roddick’s chance at revenge. Federer didn’t play great tennis against Jarkko Nieminen in the second round, and Roddick’s serve has been clicking nicely this tournament.
Unfortunately for the American, his head-to-head record against Federer isn’t his only obstacle. Basel is Federer’s home tournament, which he’s managed to win 4 of the last 5 times. The adoring Swiss crowd will be a big boost to the hometown hero.
Prediction – Roddick might take a set, but a win for the American is simply not likely.

Federer and Roddick will be playing for the 11th consecutive year. They met each other at least once every year since 2001. Wow...

Bleck...thanks for the correction. I know they've met 22 times before...I worded the intro wrong. :) I'll fix it.

Not even the home crowd factor was able to stop Hewitt snatching the title at Halle 2010 and ending a 0-15 losing streak. Andy could be in with a chance. Unlikely, I agree, but not impossible.

Roger was injured at the time. He played Wimbledon 2010 with a thigh injury and almost lost in the 1st round.
Federer in 2 sets. If it goes 3 it will be a huge surprise. If Roddick wins I just might go hide in a bunker because the world will end soon, surely.

LOL Bleck. :D
Ed, Halle isn't really the home crowd, since it was in Germany. This is literally his home tournament.
If Roddick were to win here, I might have to hide in the bunker with you.

Whoops. Geography was never my strong point. But Fed is Swiss-German so they would have been cheering for him anyway surely.
ed251137 , 11/4/11 5:14 PM
Yeah, the whole 2012 thing is about Roddick beating Federer.

Sienna , 11/4/11 9:15 PM
Wow the match lasted more than 1 hour (1h03m) I'm shocked.
Cheryl, guess the world isn't going to end. YAY!!

newfangk. You've obviously not been using all that new found leisure time to read through all the back threads! If you had you would have seen we've all been instructed stay on topic, to be on our best behaviour and to not post 'flaming' remarks. Different people interpret the new code of conduct in different ways. ;-)

Sienna,
Love u and yeah I am funny and also funky. But someone must know how difficult it is to fade out after such a long time in a job for so long and its no different from the Samprasses, Agassis and Federers either and yet when the day arrives you need to respect it. I realise the pain that Samprass had when he lost to Federer, J Mac to Agassi, Roger to Nadal, Djoko, Berdych, Tsongi. In a job you are required to leave not because you are not good enough but because you are old enough and that's the difference between performing arts specialists and 9 to 5 guys. But as long as you can delight keep the switch on!
