A place in the quarterfinals will be at stake when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Sam Querrey clash on Thursday. Tsonga continues his quest to wrap up a World Tour Finals spot.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Sam Querrey will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they do battle in the second round of the Valencia Open 500 on Thursday. Their only previous encounter came almost exactly one year ago, when Tsonga prevailed in a Shanghai Masters encounter 7-6(7), 6-1.
Querrey will be hard-pressed to turn the tide in this one because he has missed much of the season due to injury. The 6'6'' American spent his fall on the Challenger circuit and he scored his first ATP victory since Queen's Club when he thrashed Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday. Querrey, down at No. 116 in the world due to his layoff, is now 11-14 at the ATP level for the year.
Tsonga, on the other hand, is in outstanding form and on the way to wrapping up a spot in the World Tour Finals. The eighth-ranked Frenchman is coming off a title in Vienna, where he toppled Juan Martin Del Potro in last Sunday's final. Tsonga also prevailed this fall in Metz prior to a semifinal appearance in Beijing. Valencia's No. 2 seed is now 49-20 for his 2011 campaign after getting past Spanish wild card Javier Marti in round one.
While Tsonga's energy may give out sooner rather than later with Vienna in the recent past and Paris on the horizon, Querrey likely does not have enough to pull off the upset. Look for Tsonga's momentum to continue after two relatively close sets.

And another one bites the dust.
As Ricky said, maybe his energy would give out sooner rather than later. He sure didn't expend too much today.
