  • Roddick, Wawrinka in second round Basel action

    11/3/11 4:47 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick, Wawrinka in second round Basel action Andy Roddick and Stanislas Wawrinka will take the court in Basel on Thursday as the second round matches are completed.

Andy Roddick (7) vs. Radek Stepanek

No. 7 seed was impressive in his win against German veteran Tommy Haas in his first round match on Wednesday. The American will take on the wily Czech Radek Stepanek in the second round.

Roddick carries an impressive record over Stepanek. The two men have met 7 times; Roddick has only lost one of those matches. Stepanek’s one victory came on the hard courts of San Jose back in 2009. The Czech man is ranked 25 in the world, and he has the sort of game that can cause trouble on the fast indoor surface of Basel.

    Prediction – Roddick in 3.

    Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Robin Haase

This match could have been between Stanislas Wawrinka, Switzerland’s No. 2 player and world No. 3 Andy Murray. The Scot gained entry into Basel with a last-minute wildcard, but was forced to withdraw with a leg injury and was replaced by Marco Chiudinelli, who lost to Haase in the first round.

Wawrinka and Haase have met on 2 other occasions, with both matches going the distance with Wawrinka as the winner.

With Haase’s big serve, he is always a threat indoors but Wawrinka is playing at home and will have full crowd support. The Swiss should come through in a tough 3-setter.
