  • Del Potro set for rematch with Anderson

    11/3/11 5:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Del Potro set for rematch with Anderson Juan Martin Del Potro is going up against Kevin Anderson for the third time this season on Thursday in Valencia. A spot in the quarterfinals is at stake.

Juan Martin Del Potro and Kevin Anderson will be squaring off for the third time this season and second time in the last two weeks when they clash in round two of the Valencia Open 500 on Thursday. Del Potro has won both of their previous encounters; 6-4, 6-4 in the Delray Beach quarters and 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 just a few days ago in the Vienna semis.

Anderson is in the midst of his best year on tour. The 6'7'' South African is up to No. 30 in the world and he owns a stellar 41-25 record after easing past qualifier Martin Klizan on Tuesday. Prior to his semifinal appearance in Vienna, Anderson reached the quarterfinals in both Beijing and Stockholm.

Del Potro's 2011 campaign has not been his best, but it has been commendable as he makes his way back from a bad wrist injury. The 14th-ranked Argentine is 46-15 after crushing Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday. Del Potro struggled during the U.S. Open Series and lost his Stockholm opener to James Blake, but he appears to be back on track now.

As Anderson has demonstrated throughout the season, he has the talent to trouble even the best players in the world. His serve is huge and he moves well for a big man. Del Potro will have to maintain his current standard of play if he wants to fend off the upset bid. Look for Valencia's No. 6 seed to prevail in three competitive sets.
