  • Cilic, Ferrero aim for Valencia quarterfinals

    11/3/11 1:44 AM | Ricky Dimon
Cilic, Ferrero aim for Valencia quarterfinals Marin Cilic and Juan Carlos Ferrero will be in action on Thursday in Valencia. They are set for respective meetings with Marcel Granollers and Alex Bogomolov.

    Marcel Granollers vs. Marin Cilic

Cilic will look to continue his head-to-head dominance over Granollers when they take the court for second-round action at the Valencia Open 500 on Thursday. The 6'6'' Croat has won all four of the previous meetings (three on hard courts), two of which at least went to three sets. They most recently faced each other early last season in Chennai, where Cilic prevailed 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4.

It will be tough for Granollers to get over the hump now because Cilic is rounding into form. The world No. 20 finished runner-up in Beijing, won the St. Petersburg title last weekend, and took care of Milos Raonic 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday. Granollers had been a dismal 1-4 since the U.S. Open before upsetting Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets on Tuesday. The 34th-ranked Spaniard cannot be discounted, but on indoor hard courts Cilic should get the job done without too much trouble.

Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Alex Bogomolov

Eight years after their first encounter, Ferrero and Bogomolov will be squaring off for the second time in their careers on Thursday in Valencia. Ferrero won their only previous encounter 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 at the 2003 Bangkok event when he was at the very top of the sport. At 31 years old, the Spaniard is still playing well despite plenty of physical problems. Ferrero is 19-9 this season after dismissing Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets on Monday.

At 28 years old, Bogomolov is experiencing a breakout campaign on tour. The American owns a 26-19 record for the year after surging back from a set and a break down to stun Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) on Wednesday. Bogomolov recently advanced to the Moscow quarterfinals and the St. Petersburg semis. This could go either way, but home-court advantage in Spain should give Ferrero a slight edge in three sets.
