  • Ferrer, Monfils aim for Valencia quarterfinals

    11/2/11 2:57 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer, Monfils aim for Valencia quarterfinals David Ferrer and Gael Monfils will take the court on Wednesday in Valencia. They are set for respective meetings with Vasek Pospisil and Pablo Andujar.

    (1) David Ferrer vs. (Q) Vasek Pospisil

Ferrer made a strong start to his Valencia Open campaign on Tuesday afternoon, hammering fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2. The victory improved Ferrer's outstanding 2011 record to 52-15 and he has long since wrapped up his spot in the World Tour Finals. Ferrer, the top seed and defending champion of this event, remains in stellar form after finishing runner-up to Andy Murray at the Shanghai Masters.

Up next for Ferrer is Pospisil, who qualified for the main draw then upset John Isner 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(9). Playing the best tennis of his young career, 21-year-old Canadian also qualified last week in St. Petersburg and he is up to No. 133 in the world. This is a big occasion for Pospisil and the courts are probably too slow to give him much of a chance in this one. Ferrer in straight sets is the pick.

Pablo Andujar vs. (3) Gael Monfils

Andujar and Monfils will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they clash in second-round action on Wednesday. Their only previous encounter came last year in Stuttgart, where Monfils survived 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. It should be easier for the Frenchman on an indoor hard court, because Andujar much prefers clay. The Spaniard had been 0-4 during the Asian and European swings before taking out Juan Ignacio Chela on Sunday.

Monfils is in fine form, recently advancing to the Bangkok semis before capturing the Stockholm title last month. The world No. 10 is in distant World Tour Finals contention with a 37-14 record for the season after crushing Albert Montanes on Tuesday. Still, Monfils says that all he cares about the rest of the year is Paris. As long as he maintains focus in Valencia, he should cruise past Andujar in straight sets.
