  • Federer takes on Nieminen in second round of Basel

    11/2/11 3:01 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer takes on Nieminen in second round of Basel Roger Federer will take the court on Wednesday in front of his countryman to take on Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, who is enjoying good form at the moment.

Roger Federer wasn’t at his very best in his opening round match against Potito Starace. The Swiss man was still rusty from his 6 week layoff from tournament play. But Jarkko Nieminen is just the kind of opponent that is perfect for Federer while he’s honing his form.

Federer and Nieminen have met 11 times over their lengthy careers. Not only has Nieminen failed to win a single of those matches, but he hasn’t ever taken a set from Federer. The best the Finn has managed is to push Federer to several tiebreakers.

The crowd will surely be a sellout and all completely behind their tennis hero. Between the hometown support and his impressive record against Nieminen, Federer should get through this in straight sets.

Roger is 11-0 in matches and 22-0 in sets. The question is how many games will nieminen be able to win.

Good luck Roger.

I'm not watching the match. Can anyone who's watching tell me what's going on.
Is Roger playing awful, is nieminen playing really good?

We're going to a 3rd set. Geez...

He was in a bit of a shambles at the beginning of set 2. There was a game with 3 doublefaults to start of with. He was double break down and could turn the whole double break. Think he will get a solid third. already a break up

Yep there it is. on the thirsd mp and a close final game.... Pfue was I was relieved he got the game.
Of his lost 30 defeats there are maybe 10 where he had MP and still lost the game.
But a good match better then hos first match. Service is not clicking especially second.
But against an hot Nieminen a good win, Bring on Arod.

So the two veterans will face each other yet again. It can only have helped Fed to have had a bit of a tussle in the early rounds. Rare for him to be struggling on his serve though - normally it's that wayward backhand which causes a problem.

I was jumping ahead a bit. But I see A-rod has to serve his way past the wily veteran Stepanek first.

I definitely prefer for Roger to play Andy. Stepanek can be tricky and he mixes his game a lot.
