Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka and Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil will take the court as the first round continues on Tuesday.
Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Ivan Dodig
Stanislas Wawrinka comes into his home tournament off a patchy performance this fall. The Swiss lost in the second round of the US Open, the third round in Shanghai and he lost his opening match in Stockholm.
The world No. 19 drew Ivan Dodig for his first round opponent this week. Dodig has had similarly poor results; he’s only won two matches in five tournaments and played nobody of Wawrinka’s caliber.
Prediction – Wawrinka will delight the Swiss fans with a straight set win.
Thomaz Bellucci vs. Jarkko Nieminen
This is a tricky first round match for Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci. Jarkko Nieminen has had inconsistent results, with a final showing in Stockholm followed by a second round exit in Vienna at the hands of eventual champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Bellucci is largely a clay-court specialist with predictably poor results on hard courts at this time of year. Since the US Open, Bellucci has won one match in Davis Cup against Igor Andreev. The rest of the fall has been a series of first-round defeats.
Prediction – Nieminen in straight sets.
