  • Tsonga back in action, Gulbis goes up against Querrey

    11/1/11 3:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga back in action, Gulbis goes up against Querrey Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be playing two days after winning the Vienna title when he faces Javier Marti on Tuesday in Valencia. Ernests Gulbis and Sam Querrey are also taking the court.

(WC) Javier Marti vs. (2) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Tsonga will be kicking off his Valencia Open 500 campaign when he takes the court on Tuesday, about 48 hours after capturing the Vienna title. The second-seeded Frenchman is almost ready to wrap up his World Tour Finals bid, having defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in Sunday's final. Tsonga is now 48-20 for the season and he registers at No. 8 in the world.

Up first for Tsonga is Marti, a wild card entry. The 19-year-old Spaniard is up to a career-high ranking of No. 182 in the world thanks to recent success on the Futures tour. He has played five career matches at the ATP level (four this year), winning one. Tsonga should have no trouble powering his way into the second round.

    Sam Querrey vs. Ernests Gulbis

Querrey and Gulbis will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they meet in the Valencia first round. Gulbis won their first encounter 7-6(1), 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the opening round of the 2009 French Open before Querrey got revenge with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the Memphis semifinals one season later.

Both players are looking to regain their form at the moment. Querrey at least has an excuse; the 6'6'' American has been out due to injury and has not played an ATP-level match since Queen's Club. Gulbis captured his second career title this summer in Los Angeles but he has been slumping ever since. Look for Querrey to get back on track via a three-set win.

Goodness gracious me. This young Spaniard is going places. Admittedly he is playing a fatigued Tsonga but he is completely unfazed and handled what struck me as a couple of very dodgy line-calls with great aplomb.

The unforced errors from Marti are mounting and Tsonga's experience is now showing
but it is an impressive performance nonetheless.

And on the other court Gulbis is doing a Gulbis against what must be a very rusty Querry.

See Isner playing with Anderson... no more Quisner?
