Wimbledon marathon men John Isner and Nicolas Mahut will be in action on Monday in Valencia. They will go up against Vasek Pospisil and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, respectively.
(Q) Vasek Pospisil vs. John Isner
Isner will be in action for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open when he takes the court on Monday at the Valencia Open. The 6'9'' American planned to play the Asian swing, but an abdominal strain sidelined him. Isner, ranked 23rd, caught fire on the American hard courts and he comes in with a 32-19 record for the season.
Up first for Isner is Pospisil, who qualified for the main draw over the weekend. The 21-year-old Canadian is playing the best tennis of his young career and he is up to No. 133 in the world. Pospisil has earned all five of his career ATP match victories in 2011 and he also qualified for St. Petersburg last week. The underdog could serve his way to a set, but look for a rusty Isner to survive in three.
(Q) Nicolas Mahut vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
Mahut and Garcia-Lopez will also be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they clash in Valencia on Monday. Garcia-Lopez is a disappointing 19-27 for the season and indoor hard courts are not helping his cause. The Spaniard is a woeful 2-5 since the U.S. Open, although he managed to beat James Blake last week in Vienna before succumbing to Jurgen Melzer.
While Mahut has also been playing a fair amount of fall-season tennis, he has mostly been doing it at the Challenger level. The 29-year-old Frenchman's results have been modest at best, but he at least reached an ATP quarterfinal in Metz last month (lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets). This could go either way, but Mahut in three is the pick simply due to surface advantage.
