A blockbuster first-round matchup in Valencia pits David Ferrer against Fernando Verdasco. The two Spaniards will be facing each other for the 12th time.
David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco will be meeting for 12th time in their careers when they do battle in an all-Spanish showdown on Tuesday at the Valencia Open 500.
Verdasco leads the head-to-head series 7-4, but nine of their 11 encounters have come on clay and the hard-court score is even at 1-1. They have not faced each other since an epic fourth-round battle at the 2010 U.S. Open, which Verdasco won 5-7, 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4).
More than a year later, it is Ferrer who is completely on top of his game. Ranked fifth and seeded first this week, Ferrer is an awesome 51-15 for his 2011 campaign. He has been to six finals (winning twice) and he is coming off a runner-up finish at the Shanghai Masters (lost to an on-fire Andy Murray).
Verdasco is a modest 35-22 for the season and he has done very little since leaving the clay in late spring. The world No. 24 struggled on American hard courts, culminating with a blowout loss to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in round three of the U.S. Open. Verdasco owns a 3-2 record during the fall swing, with setbacks against Tomas Berdych (6-1, 6-0 in Beijing) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (in Shanghai).
Despite lackluster form at the moment, Verdasco remains a dangerous opponent and he has upset potential if he is serving well and connecting on his forehand. However, Ferrer is one of the most consistent players on tour and he will take advantage of anyone who is not in tip-top shape. Ferrer in straight sets is the pick.
