Tournament seeds Janko Tipsarevic and Marin Cilic look to continue their St. Petersburg campaigns, as they square off against respective opponents Potito Starace and Andreas Seppi. The players are vying for a semifinal berth.
(2) Janko Tipsarevic vs. Potito Starace
World No. 13 Janko Tipsarevic looks to break a 1-1 series tie with veteran Potito Starace. Friday signals their third meeting on hard-court.
Tipsarevic advanced to the quarterfinal after opponent Michael Berrer retired with illness. The second seed had built a 6-3, 2-0 edge when the German called time on the match. Tipsarevic is bidding for his eighth semifinal berth this season.
Starace is through to the final eight by virtue 6-2, 6-4 victory over 8th seed Dmitry Tursunov. The 30-year-old Italian will attempt to make his first tour-level semi since April.
(4) Marin Cilic vs. Andreas Seppi
Fourth seed Marin Cilic and Andreas Seppi are level at 4-4 in the head-to-head series. Cilic is 2-0 against the Italian in 2011, which includes a hard-court victory in Canada.
Cilic came through a tricky round of 16, having rallied to upend Somdev Devvarman in three sets. He remains on track to reach his fourth semifinal of the year.
Seppi dug out of a set deficit to dismiss Igor Andreev in the second round, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Italian looks to make his first tour-level semi since June, when he captured the Eastbourne title.
