Juan Martin Del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will take the court in Vienna on Friday.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Tommy Haas
Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro has his eyes on the Davis Cup final coming up against Spain. He came into Vienna having missed the entire Asian swing and looking to work himself into form. He had a straight set victory over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner to get into the quarters, where he will take on Petzschner’s countryman Tommy Haas.
Haas, who is 10 years Del Potro’s senior, is ranked 273 in the world. He is trying to make a comeback from injury, but he’s been struggling. He had to qualify to get into the main draw and he’s had two wins over Juan Ignacio Chela and Aljaz Bedene. Unfortunately for Haas, Juan Martin Del Potro on hard courts is most likely going to be too difficult.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Xavier Malisse
This may not be the easy match the rankings would suggest. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the tournament top seed met Xavier Malisse already this year at the Indian Wells Masters. Malisse won that match in straight sets.
Tsonga will have plenty of motivation in Vienna; he’s still looking to cement his spot at the World Tour Finals. But Malisse still has the kind of game that can cause trouble on a fast indoor court. Tsonga had a disappointing second round loss to Kei Nishikori in Shanghai and could be vulnerable.
Prediction – Tsonga for the win in 3.

Delpot is destroying Haas at the moment. At 33, Haas is another player who must be considering retiring. I think over the next couple of years, there will be quite a lot of snakes and ladders.
