Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and veteran Tommy Haas take the court in Vienna as the second round wraps up at the Erste Bank Open.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Jarkko Nieminen
This will be a tricky first round match for Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Jarkko Nieminen plays his best tennis on indoor hard courts. The Finn also comes into Vienna off an impressive run to the finals in Stockholm last week.
Tsonga did well in the first part of the fall season, with a win in Metz and a semifinal showing in Beijing. But he lost his first match in Shanghai to Kei Nishikori and hasn’t played since.
Tsonga and Nieminen have split their other four meetings at two each. Tsonga will be heavily favored going into the match, but Nieminen could well pull off the upset.
Tommy Haas vs. Aljaz Bedene
German veteran Tommy Haas is actually ranked lower than Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia. Bedene is ranked No. 204 in the world, his ranking due in large part to the time he spends split between the Futures and Challengers tours.
Haas is ranked No. 273. The German has the more experience by far, but Bedene has been enjoying success at the lower levels, including a final at the Futures event in Croatia. Haas has been playing well enough that he should be able to get the win, but don’t be surprised if Bedene advances.
