No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro will take on the German Philipp Petzschner in his opener in Vienna.
Juan Martin Del Potro (2) vs. Philipp Petzschner
Juan Martin Del Potro hasn’t had a great fall. The Argentine is ranked 15 in the world, but he completely skipped the Asian swing and he lost his opening match in Stockholm to American veteran James Blake.
Ordinarily this would mean good fortune for Philipp Petzschner, but unfortunately for the German, Del Potro is sure to be looking ahead to the big Davis Cup final in Spain. The Argentine is going to need at least a few matches under his belt before taking on the Spaniards.
As long as Del Potro has shaken off the rust of his time off, the Argentine should win this one.
Nikolay Davydenko vs. Steve Darcis
One-time top 4 player Nikolay Davydenko just barely has a winning record on the season. The Russian is 24-22 for 2011 with one title year-to-date in Munich. The Russian comes into Vienna off a semifinal showing at his home tournament in Moscow.
Belgium’s Steve Darcis is ranked just inside the top 100, with most of his time spent on the Challenger circuit. The Belgian is a big-hitter and the indoor courts should favor his game, but Davydenko will likely be too much for him to handle.
Prediction – Davydenko in 2.
