American James Blake and beloved Austrian veteran Thomas Muster will take the court at the Erste Bank Open.
James Blake vs. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
Thanks to recent good form, James Blake’s ranking rose 9 spots in one week from 69 to No. 60. The American veteran made the semifinals in Stockholm last week. His first opponent in Vienna is the Spanish clay courter Guillermo Garcia.
Blake has a single win over Garcia-Lopez in Stockholm back in 2005. Garcia-Lopez hasn’t had a great year. He hasn’t won more than 1 match at a time since the French Open in May. The surface favors Blake as does current form. The American in straight sets.
Thomas Muster vs. Dominic Thiem
Austria’s Thomas Muster turned pro in 1985. He won 44 titles and became world No. 1, but after 11 years of retirement, the Austrian tried a comeback. The comeback hasn’t gone well; Muster has won just two matches.
The Austrian has announced that this tournament will be his last. He will take on a fellow Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem. Muster’s ranking of 1078 is actually higher than Thiem’s (1890). If the veteran is to get a third win, it will be on Tuesday.
Expect the crowd to be fully behind Muster for one more win before retirement.
