Popular Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and the big-serving South African Kevin Anderson will kick off the Erste Bank Open on Monday.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. Ryan Sweeting
World No. 47 Marcos Baghdatis has had a rough fall season. The Cypriot had first round losses in both Tokyo to Andy Murray and to Milos Raonic last week in Stockholm. He will look to make amends this week in Vienna.
His opponent is the American Ryan Sweeting, who sits at No. 66 in the world. Sweeting has not been able to get a win over Baghdatis in two other meetings, one of which came this year on the hard courts of Winston-Salem.
Sweeting has had some success on the Challenger circuit, but he’s been struggling on the main tour. This should be a good opportunity for Baghdatis to turn around his losing record. Baghdatis for the win.
Kevin Anderson vs. Andreas Haider-Maurer
South Africa’s Kevin Anderson will start his Vienna bid against hometown player Andreas Haider-Maurer. Anderson has been in excellent form recently. The fast indoor courts give players like Anderson, with huge first serves, a big advantage. The South African made the quarterfinals last week in Stockholm.
Andreas Haider-Maurer is ranked just inside the top 100 at No. 94. The Austrian has been struggling mightily of late. Haider-Maurer lost in the first round in Moscow to clay courter Pere Riba in 3 sets.
Even in front of the home crowd, Haider-Maurer is likely to have little success returning Anderson’s serve. The South African in straight sets.
