  • Del Potro opens in Stockholm against Blake

    10/19/11 1:15 AM | Ricky Dimon
Del Potro opens in Stockholm against Blake Juan Martin Del Potro will kick off his Stockholm campaign against James Blake on Wednesday. Kevin Anderson and Tommy Haas are also taking the court.

James Blake vs. (2) Juan Martin Del Potro

Blake and Del Potro will be squaring off for the third time in their careers and for the second time this season when they clash in round two of the If Stockholm Open on Wednesday. Del Potro has won two in a row and leads the head-to-head series 2-1. The Argentine prevailed 6-4, 6-7(3), 5-7, 6-3, 10-8 at last year's Australian Open and took their most recent encounter 6-4, 7-6(3) this summer in Los Angeles. Blake's lone victory came via retirement back in 2007.

Both players are looking to maintain decent form after skipping the Asian swing. Del Potro lost to Gilles Simon in the third round of the U.S. Open, but he won a pair of Davis Cup singles rubbers over Serbia and is 42-13 for his 2011 campaign. Blake finished runner-up to Ivo Karlovic at a Challenger event earlier this month and he is 16-13 at the ATP level after dismissing Olivier Rochus during first-round action on Tuesday. An upset is possible, but Del Potro in three sets is the pick.

(WC) Tommy Haas vs. (5) Kevin Anderson

Haas' injury-plagued season has been mostly a disaster up through this point, but he could be rounding into form in time for some inspiration to continue on in 2012. The 33-year-old German reached the U.S. Open third round out of nowhere and--after bypassing the Asian swing--he maintained the momentum with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Somdev Devvarman on Monday.

While Haas is just 5-9 this year, Anderson is enjoying his best campaign on tour. The 6'8'' South African boasts a 36-23 record and he is up to No. 31 in the world. Seeded fifth in Stockholm, Anderson defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6(1), 7-6(4). Haas has to the potential to get another win, but current form and indoor hard courts favor Anderson. Look for the favorite to prevail in two tight sets.
