Milos Raonic and Marcos Baghdatis are set for a blockbuster first-round meeting on Tuesday in Stockholm. David Nalbandian and Xavier Malisse will also be in action.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. (6) Milos Raonic
Both Baghdatis and Raonic appear to be rounding into form--albeit under different circumstances--heading into an opening-round clash at the If Stockholm Open on Tuesday. Baghdatis did not have a good U.S. Open Series, but the 47th-ranked Cypriot finished runner-up to Janko Tipsarevic in Kuala Lumpur and took Andy Murray to 6-4 in the third in his Tokyo opener.
Raonic suffered a bad hip injury at Wimbledon and was on the sidelines until mid-September. The 20-year-old Canadian is 2-3 upon his return to action, with both victories coming in third-set tiebreakers. Raonic, seeded sixth this week, will have to serve huge because he is still rusty and cannot afford to exchange baseline rallies with his opponent. Look for Baghdatis to get the best of this one after three entertaining sets.
David Nalbandian vs. Xavier Malisse
Nalbandian and Malisse will be doing battle for the sixth time in their careers but for the first time in more than three years when they take the court on Tuesday in Stockholm. The head-to-head series is 4-1 in Nalbandian's favor, including 2-1 on hard courts (all outdoors). They most recently faced each other at the 2008 Miami Masters, where Malisse finally got on the scoreboard against his opponent with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Current form suggests Nalbandian will regain the upper hand. The Argentine is ranked seven spots behind his opponent at No. 58 in the world, but he played decent tennis during the Asian swing and has not lost in a first round since the Montreal Masters. Malisse, on the other hand, has been losing in opening rounds left and right and he fell in round two of a Challenger event earlier this month in Mons, Belgium. Nalbandian will be motivated to stay in shape en route to the Davis Cup final and he should take this in straight sets.
