An in-form Andy Murray will have a chance to complete the Asian treble on Sunday, as he takes to the court against 3rd seed David Ferrer. The players are set to contest their eighth career meeting for the Shanghai Masters championship title.
Defending champion Andy Murray holds a narrow 4-3 series edge against finals opponent David Ferrer. The two are meeting for the third time in 2011, with the Scot having won both of their hard-court matches.
Murray advanced to the championship final by virtue of his comfortable win over Kei Nishikori of Japan. The 24-year-old needed just 57 minutes to record a 6-3, 6-0 semifinal victory. He is bidding for his fifth ATP World Tour title this season.
Should Murray post a championship win in Shanghai, he will eclipse Roger Federer as world No. 3 on Monday.
Ferrer rallied to upend fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the semifinals, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3. The 29-year-old won his third consecutive three-set match, having downed both Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andy Roddick earlier in the week.
He will attempt to win his third ATP World Tour title of the year.
Prediction: Murray to complete the treble in straight sets.

Way to go, Andy! Great win indeed...his serve has become his armor! It serves as a protection tool which clearly shows how mentally strong Andy is becoming...
Congrats to all Andy's fans for the new Masters titke! And congrats for the NEW No3!
natashao , 10/16/11 12:32 PM
I meant to say TITLE of course..:)
natashao , 10/16/11 12:39 PM
Wow three titles on three consecutive weeks! Congrats to Murray and his fans! If I'm not wrong, this is the first time he moves ahead of Fed in the rankings. He had moved ahead of Rafa and Nole in the rankings before, this is the first time he'll be ahead of Fed.
luckystar , 10/16/11 1:32 PM
Federer at 4? That is quite a huge occurrence, I would say. Congrats Murray, didn't see the match because of the rugby but he deserves it.
samprallica , 10/16/11 1:34 PM
Congratulations Andy and his fans!
May he go from strength to strenght and keep building on this confidence.
Now the doctor is ordering a slam so he can have one under his belt and know he can do it again.
chlorostoma , 10/16/11 2:09 PM
Yesssssss! Go muzzz!!!

alex , 10/16/11 2:40 PM
Deuce: Absolutely gutted I ended up missing the party! Am not at home at the moment and I was struggling to get a connection and then a live stream that would work. By the time I'd done that I realised I was late preparing lunch for guests so was only able to watch with one eye. Two G and Ts mid morning didnt help!
Upwards and onwards for Andy. Hope he can keep this up till the end of the year and who knows what 2012 will have in store.
Hate to think of the hangover you and Alex will have tomorrow. lol.
ed251137 , 10/16/11 3:37 PM
Yes. It's nb to celebritise 250/500 events. No points in Shanghai. Why say great? He's not. He's ordinry in compare with others. No big major.
He win when the big boys don't play.
Fleur , 10/16/11 4:07 PM
He won Shanghai last year by completely duffing Federer up and did the same to Nole and Nadal at Cincinnati and Tokyo this year. He does beat the big boys. He doesn't win at the big matches, fair enough, but who knows?
In any case, 2 Masters Series titles, one 500 and one 250 is better than a sole 250 win for the year.
samprallica , 10/16/11 4:29 PM
Fleur, you converse on this site like a 10 dollar Cambodian hooker.
Spellcheck please, & perhaps a little TLC.What's the point of posting if no one can understand you?
Oh & for the record the 'big boys play' last year in Shanghai, & Andy carried all before him,
Including a crushing of your dear Idol in the final.
Sosueme , 10/16/11 4:35 PM
Aw Andy superb, superb! No 3 let the party begin!! Ave got wine in hand! Yippee! Hangover 2morrow : ( Duece are you celebrating?
mojo , 10/16/11 5:01 PM
Sampra,
Andy has not yet peaked as a player.
We have still to see what the real Andy Murray shall be like.
There's a chicken & the egg quandary here,
To peak he needs to win a slam,
But without peaking it might not happen,
He needs that monkey of his back.
It took Novak time to beat Fedal & it's only truly started to happen this year.
When you factor in the fact that Djokovic has played Fedal double the amount of times I think we should be less concerned about him not winning the big one just yet.
As long as he's improving, & if the less 3 weeks is anything to go by I'd say that he is most definitely doing that!
Philipoussis,
Tsonga,
Puerta,
These are the players Fed, Novak & Nadal faced in their maiden slams.
They were lucky.
Andy faced Federer twice & a Djokivic that went on to beat everyone in his path. So he's been a bit unlucky, but I have no doubt that he is now playing well enough and (perhaps more significantly) mature enough to handle the pressure
When he gets to his next final, which I believe shall be in 3 months time.
It might be the one or it might be the next one or the one after that.
But it will happen.
And then the fun shall really start.
Sosueme , 10/16/11 5:28 PM
Let's talk about the Big Three
Shall we?
Yippee!
Thanx for the congrats everyone
alex and mojo, am I celebrating, am I heck!
ed, shocked domesticity came between you, me and Andy.........;)
deuce , 10/16/11 5:37 PM
sosueme, 10 dollars? Is she that expensive? The way she talks, I would not take her even for gratis. ;-)
Yes deuce, let's talk about the Big 3. I consider myself the luckiest tennis fan in the world today. Having my 3 top favorites as the Big 3, no more hiding behind sofas next year for me. I'll just sit back, enjoy, and watch who among them will emerge as the Big Gun. **preferably Rafa of course ;-)
phoenix , 10/16/11 5:44 PM
Don't be like that Pheonix,
Lady Flytrap of Saigon could be the one!
I can just picture it too......
" Well, baby, me so horny. Me so HORNY. Me love you long time. You party? "
And all that kind of thing, lol!
Sosueme , 10/16/11 6:37 PM
As I predicted, Murray did it! Congratulations to Murray's fans - deuce Sosueme and alex! New #3 in the world! Well earned!
Nativenewyorker , 10/16/11 9:54 PM
Congratulations Andy. Now for #2 it's not that far away. I'm sure you don't want to stop at #3 you must want the #1 spot.
Only 2550 points away. Maybe after Miami.
bleck , 10/17/11 9:41 AM
Was just wondering if all the nadal fans that are congratulating murray also did it when he rose to #2 in the world in 2009 and pushed nadal to #3. Did you?
bleck , 10/17/11 9:48 AM
Yes we did. We even congratulated Nole for winning Wimbledon and for becoming no.1. They all worked hard for their results so they deserved what they get!
luckystar , 10/17/11 10:00 AM
Good.
bleck , 10/17/11 10:01 AM
The majority of Rafans are a realistic bunch. Of course we hope for him to win every match but we also accept when he doesn't. It is fashionable to accuse us of making excuses for him (i.e. when he is carrying an injury) or to attack us for being disloyal if we criticise his performance. And we are quick to congratulate his opponents when they have they have beaten him fairly and squarely.
ed251137 , 10/17/11 10:29 AM
bleck - genuine fans get along pretty well on this site (although rafa and muzz fans get along particularly well).
posters seem to have an unspoken mentality that a fan who needs to pull others down betrays a lack of confidence in their own guy's abilities or, worse still, is probably clouded in their perception of their own favourite.
There are the occasioanl irritants like painster who seem only capable of defining themselves by what they're against rather than for, but most of us are pretty fair in recognising greatness wherever we see it.
There have been times when this site has not been this way and there are still occasional spats, but things are generally pretty civilised these days.
alex , 10/17/11 11:02 AM
deuce - "Here's to the Big 3!" LOL:-)
bleck - that btw was a humorous response to the suggestion only last month that the Big 4 should be reduced to the Big 3 by excluding muzz, as opposed to a cruel attack on roger. We show respect for age on here;)
btw, roger WAS a genius, imo, but all good things must come to an end and he is now just very very good, and I'm sure we have a few more flashes of greatness to see in the wind-down stage of his career.
alex , 10/17/11 11:14 AM
alex, I have to agree with you in the sense that Roger is very inconsistent now. And the rankings show that. But despite that he can still play at a very high level every now and then (RG, USO).
bleck , 10/17/11 11:47 AM
alex
, 10/17/11 11:02 AM
Your sentiments in above post: spot on!
As for Muzza, about time he was accorded due respect, he CAN be included in the "Big 4" bracket without any ifs or buts now.............................way to go. Now we will see a real tussle amongst them.....................so much to play for next year.
Vamos!!!!!!!!!!!
rafaisthebest , 10/17/11 11:47 AM
rafaisthebest, Why can he "be included in the "Big 4" bracket without any ifs or buts now"? Because he is #3?
He has been up to #2 in 2009.
bleck , 10/17/11 2:16 PM
true bleck.
Why ios this different then any other years? When you actually look at his losses in the slams then it is terrible. He completely lost the plot in every match. In his third final he even did not show up at all.
He has been whining, griping, yelling and screaming to his box (read Mom). When it became a little tense in sets he just rolled over and played dead.
We will see if Muzza can take it to Nadal, Federer and Djokovic when it's game on.
When he does or when he plays his best without the yelling and screaming at his box I think he is in a better place and can defintely go for slamsucces.
Sienna , 10/17/11 2:24 PM
The WTF will certainly be telling for what's to come in 2012. Can't wait for the tournament to begin.
bleck , 10/17/11 2:39 PM
Regarding my post above. The WTF will be telling except for Nadal. Nadal never performed very well in the WTF.
bleck , 10/17/11 2:50 PM
bleck,
Since you asked, the answer is yes I do congratulate other players when move up in the ranks. I congratulated Nole's fans when he won Wimbledon and deservedly became the new #1 player. When Andy reached #2 for a few weeks in 2009, that was fine with me. He played great tennis that year. I was not surprised to see it happen, especially given Rafa struggling to come back after his knee tendinitis. I remember Murray winning Toronto and then getting beaten by Fed in Cincy. He certainly looked to be ready to win his first slam. Now I see some maturity in him, more mental toughness and maybe he is finally ready to win that slam.
