  • Roddick and Ferrer battle in US Open rematch

    10/14/11 4:10 AM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick and Ferrer battle in US Open rematch Andy Roddick and David Ferrer will meet for the second time in six weeks, with the Shanghai semifinals on the line.

American Andy Roddick and David Ferrer of Spain are no strangers to each other. The two men have played on nine other occasions, with Ferrer just barely edging Roddick in the head-to-head 5-4.

Roddick won their last meeting at the US Open. Ferrer was recovering from a wrist micro-fracture and Roddick was able to take advantage.

The American is trying to find his own form. He had a shaky opening round against Yen-Hsun Lu, but he showed what he can do with his serve against Nicolas Almagro in the round of 16.

Prediction – Ferrer still hasn’t shaken the rust off from his injury this summer. Roddick to slip past the Spaniard in 3.

Does anyone know if Roddick is still in contention for the World Tour Finals next month?

ts38 , 10/14/11 6:03 AM

ts38,

I was curious, so I checked it out. According to what I found, Roddick entered the tournament in 20th place, however winning the title would put him in 9th place.

Dolgo also has a chance, being in 14th place at the start of the tournament. A run to the title would put Dolgo in 9th place.

The tennis channel has been showing the standings in the points total for the race to London.

Tsonga - 2790
Almagro - 2325

Soderling - 2080
Del Potro - 2050

1st set TB. I don't remember the last time I was so nervous watching Andy play.
Tx NNY. Yes I just heard the commentators say he could reach 9th if he wins here. Is it possible? Maybe... There's still Basel and Paris.

The tennis channel has been really good about keeping everyone updated on where the players stand. They also show the standings. Roddick would have to win the title to even put himself in contention, but in 9th place with a few more tournaments, it would be a possibility.

I have been watching the match. Now Ferrer is up 4-2 in the second set. He can be very tough and sometimes gets stronger as the match goes on. Roddick has been looking very good in this tournament.

6-2 :-/

I like the way Ferrer plays today, so many forehand winners, aces and moving into the court and volleying well. It seems to me that now Rafa is out, there's motivation for both Spaniards Ferrer and Lopez to play well here, as they do not have the daunting task of facing Rafa.

Ferrer lost a tough tiebreak, but has come back strong in this match. It is nice to see him playing well. This is a battle. Also nice to see Roddick back in decent form again.

I finally saw Lopez's win over Berdych on the tennis channel. He was serving lights out and playing some great tennis to get the win. I hope that some of the other players will get a chance in the spotlight. I am sure that Rafa would love to see either Ferrer or Lopez win this tournament.

I am looking forward to Dolgo and Nishikori. This is a chance to see some of the players who normally might not get this far in a Masters tournament. With so many of the top seeds out, they can have their moment.

Awful tie break from Roddick, hopeless at the net and the little road runner runs into the semis...

deuce , 10/14/11 10:49 AM

So it is Ferrer winning this time. These two guys always have battles playing each other. Congrats to Ferrer for the win, now into another Masters semifinal, off clay too. Well done!

Commies to Roddick, but he's playing well today, and the match is close in the first and final sets. Someone has to lose and this time it's Roddick.

I suppose Roddick ran out of gas in the third set TB. I would have liked to see him get to the final, but maybe in Paris, he'll be able to post some more decent results. He still has points to defend in Basel. This year has been the worst for him. I hope 2012 will be better coz I doubt Mardy will be able to sustain the points he has accumulated this year. American tennis needs someone to keep things together for us.
