• Tomic and Dolgopolov meet in battle of young guns

    10/13/11 3:39 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tomic and Dolgopolov meet in battle of young guns Two and up-and-comers will meet on Thursday with the Shanghai Masters quarters as a reward for the winner.

Two of tennis’s most unconventional players will square off on Thursday. Youngsters Bernard Tomic and Alexandr Dolgopolov will meet for the third time.

Dolgoplov broke through at the 2011 Australian Open, leaving a path of defeated seeds in his wake. The Ukrainian finally went down to eventual finalist Andy Murray in the quarters. Since then, Dolgopolov has played well enough to see his ranking rise all the way to No. 18 in the world.

Tomic’s breakthrough came at Wimbledon, where he came up through qualifying and advanced all the way to the quarters before going down to Novak Djokovic.

Both men play cunning, off-pace tennis. Neither player employs a tactic of baseline ball-bashing. Dolgopolov wins free points off his blistering first serve, but otherwise this match should be a study in tennis tactics.

Prediction – Dolgopolov in 3 long sets.

It's a shame the match is now played in an untelevised indoor court because of the rain. I was looking forward to watching this match. Now the score is 5-5 first set, and I feel that Tomic may get this one; he seems more consistent these days compared to Dolgo.

And yes, Tomic wins the first set 7-5. Let's see whether Dolgo can fight back.

Thanks lucky, couldn't understand why I couldn't get anything. Bummer :( Agree re Tomic. Come on Bernie :)

deuce, I couldn't get anything either, I was looking at the live score! Now they're in the second set. Who do you think will win this one, and who you hope will win?

This is very disappointing. I was so looking forward to seeing this match. It would be fascinating to see these two unconventional young players go at it. Tomic seems to be playing well and that win over Fish would give him some confidence going forward. He gave him a battle in Japan, and this time got the better of him.

I guess all that can be done is to follow the score update. I would hope to see Dolgo give him a fight.

Sorry deuce, I posted my comment and then realized that you've already given you answer in your post.

Right now, Dolgo leading in the second set, 3-1 now. It's getting interesting.

luckystar , 10/13/11 7:58 AM

Oh, looks like Dolgo is going to get this one, deuce. Shame can't watch this match!

Looks like Tomic is going to get bagelled, poor boy!

Ferrero looks like in the mood to hand out bagel too, to none other than Ferrer! Maybe Ferrer can ask for a breadstick instead?

luckystar , 10/13/11 8:27 AM

lucky, yes, just checked score and Dolgopolov is racing away with it. Oh well, all good experience for Bernie. Do like Dolgop too, mind you. When playing well can cause all sorts of damage.

deuce , 10/13/11 8:28 AM

Congratulations to Dolgo for coming from behind. Kind of a wacky three set match with one or the other dominating so completely. I hoped that Dolgo would win. So he's still in the tournament and hopefully I will get to see one of his matches.

Nativenewyorker , 10/13/11 8:35 AM

NNY, should be able to see Dolgo's next match as it will be a QF match. All QFs should be at the main court. His next opponent is either Nishikori or Giraldo.

luckystar , 10/13/11 9:09 AM

Will that be tomorrow? I will have to check the tennis channel, however I know they do replay the matches. The time difference has been a bit of a problem. Rafa's match will be at 3:00 am my time again, so I won't be able to see it.

Thanks for the information! Looking forward to it! :)

Nativenewyorker , 10/13/11 9:24 AM

NNY, all QF matches to be played tomorrow, the order of play we have to wait till end of today after all of today's matches are being played.
