Tournament seed Gilles Simon will be in round of 16 action in Shanghai, set to face Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden. Thursday afternoon signals the first meeting between the players.
Eighth seed Gilles Simon defeated Spanish veteran Albert Montanes in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1. The 26-year-old Frenchman completed the match untested, having held seven consecutive service games through 57 minutes.
He is bidding for his 40th match win of the season.
World No. 124 Matthew Ebden dismissed fellow qualifier Ryan Harrison in the second round, 6-4, 6-2. The 23-year-old remains on track to win his 10th tour-level match in 2011.
Prediction: Simon in straight sets.
