  • Murray battles Wawrinka for quarterfinal berth

    10/13/11 12:34 AM | Kelli DeMario
Murray battles Wawrinka for quarterfinal berth World No. 4 Andy Murray will continue his Shanghai title defense as he squares off against fellow seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The players are set to contest their 10th meeting late Thursday afternoon.

Defending champion Andy Murray holds a narrow 5-4 series advantage against 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The two last met at the 2010 US Open, where the Swiss rallied to win a third-round match in four sets.

Murray received passage into the round of 16 after scheduled opponent Dmitry Tursunov pulled out with an injury. The 24-year-old Scot is bidding for his fifth consecutive hard-court quarterfinal berth.

Wawrinka fought through a difficult second round, having rallied to upend American qualifier Donald Young in three sets. The 26-year-old Swiss looks to make his first quarterfinal since August, when he finished among the last eight in Canada.

    Prediction: Murray in straight sets.

What is it with Wawrinka, that Murray has to fight so hard to overcome? Now one set all and into the final set. H2H is also close at 4-5, Murray slight favorite.

Oh dear, Andy's timing is right off and he's making SO many unforced errors. Stan doesn't have to do anything except get the ball back :( Not another Donald Young meltdown, surely.
For goodness sakes Andy focus! You need to defend your title here!

Wawa is a rather tough nut to crack. He's gotten some of his strategy by watching Fed play against some players, plus he likes to jerk his opponent around the court. I saw him do that a lot in Wimbles '09 vs. Murray, albeit he lost, but it was a tough match.

Get a move on Andy. Rafa is waiting to play his match!

5-2 now, well done Stan, for making Murray works hard for it. Actually Stan is a difficult opponent for Rafa and Nole too. They may sometimes beat him in straight sets but the sets are always tight. Stan is a good aggressive player and is a former top ten player.

5-3 now, Wawa has found some mojo. What are the chances of Stan breaking now and levelikng the match. the crowd would go wild.

Too little too late for Stan, but he made the 3rd set exciting. The QFs are nearly all set.

Phew! Just the kind of match Andy needed under his belt. Not playing too well, but toughed it out.
Well done. Come on!
ed, under the sofa is now free and all yours ;)

There were some stunning moments from both players.
Waw is tricky customer for sure.
The sliced approach shot early on was quite brilliant & very nice to see.
There were hints of both Nadal & Federer from his play.
Andy shall get used to the conditions (& the balls) in no time.

Andy served overall @ 64% despite the dip at the end.
He's been serving better than usual for months now.
But still with the pace & the aces etc
One hurdle may now be resolving itself, but there's still the issue of the 2nd serve.
