  • Ferrer and Ferrero clash in all-Spanish showdown

    10/13/11 2:52 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer and Ferrero clash in all-Spanish showdown David Ferrer and Juan Carlos Ferrero will battle for a spot in the Shanghai quarterfinals as round of 16 action gets underway on Thursday.

Compatriots Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer will take the court for the ninth time in their long careers. Ferrer, who is ranked No. 5 in the world right now, has the edge in their matchups with six wins to Ferrero’s two.

Ferrero, who is ranked 69th in the world, has had a resurgence this fall, with a round of 16 showing at the US Open and a quarterfinal result in Beijing last week. The Spanish veteran upset Fernando Verdasco in the second round on Wednesday.

Ferrer struggled with a wrist injury that kept him out of much of the summer hardcourt swing and perhaps played a factor in his round of 16 loss to Andy Roddick at the US Open. He appears to be back at full speed again.

Prediction – Ferrer for the win in straight sets.

JCF, one of my old faves is presently leading ferrer 4-0. I hope Juan wins this one.

He takes the first set 6-1.

Ferrero leading the second set but has an MTO for his ankle. If he takes this one, then we'll have a JCF vs Roddick QF, battle of the veterans and the 2003 slam winners!

WOW, the 10th game was a real thrilla. C'mon Juan, just do it.

JCF is a lovely, classy player but alas, as with Nalby, injury and time have taken their toll. Ferrer is astonishing though, a little road runner.

Awhhh, too bad for JCF. He had it until the 10th game and then lost his concentration. I also feel his heel was hurting.

I hope Roddick is ready for Ferrer tomorrow. AR had a pretty easy match with Almagro, so he should not be too gassed when Ferrer starts running him around. AR needs to do a surf 'n turf tomorrow, big serve and FH. As Gilbert usually says, bring the heat and the wood. ha ha.
