  • Ferrer takes on big-serving Raonic in Shanghai opener

    10/12/11 1:37 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer takes on big-serving Raonic in Shanghai opener David Ferrer will take on familiar foe Milos Raonic as the Shanghai second round wraps up on Wednesday.

David Ferrer (3) vs. Milos Raonic

Spain’s David Ferrer is no stranger to Canadian Milos Raonic. The world No. 31 had his breakthrough year in 2011. He was forced to qualify for the Australian Open, where he left a string of upsets in his wake en route to a round of 16 defeat at the hands of none other than Ferrer.

Ferrer spent part of his summer on the sidelines while he recovered from a micro-fracture of his wrist. He had a good showing in Tokyo last week, but he was decimated in the semis by Andy Murray.

Raonic has been out since Wimbledon recovering from surgery. The Canadian played his first tournament since June last week in Tokyo, where he lost in the second round to Rafael Nadal.

Prediction – Raonic is still shaking off the rust. Ferrer in 2.

Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Fernando Verdasco (16)

In this battle of the Spaniards, veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero will take on countryman Fernando Verdasco for a spot in the third round. Despite the disparity in rankings (Verdasco is No. 24, Ferrero is No. 69), Ferrero actually has a good shot at the upset here.

Verdasco hasn’t been playing particularly well of late. The No. 16 seed was completely demolished by Tomas Berdych in the quarters in Beijing, and his US Open bid resulted in a straight-set ouster at the hands of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Prediction – If Verdasco plays well, he should pull through, but recent form suggests that Ferrero could pull off the win.

I think Ferrero is going to win.

Ricky: To say Verdasco has not been playing particularly well of late is a generous understatement!

He is often very erractic: either very good (sometimes very, very good) or terrible - as in that last match against Berdych. He was in such a filthy mood I almost expected him to leave the court in a paddy.

Definitely Ferrero for the win. More than likely in straight sets.

Sorry. The above comment should have been addressed to Cheryl.

Verdasco wins the first set and now Ferrero fighting back in the second. Nice hitting with some awesome shots by both. Verdasco playing better here than in that horrible match against Berdych last week.

expected one for JCF

9-7 in the breaker for Ferrer. Down a mini break. Up a mini break. Back to even. Then 9-7.

Good on Raonic for pressing.

Ed - Verdasco is incredibly erratic. On the right day, he could lose to ANYONE.

you mean for making the match close?

yes, Raonic was definitely pressing with his forehand the entire match!!!
