The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov will take on Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos in the Shanghai second round. Jurgen Melzer will face Santiago Giraldo.
Alexandr Dolgopolov (12) vs. Albert Ramos (Q)
The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov was supposed to face Marin Cilic according to the rankings, but Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos had different plans. Cilic was upended in straight sets, and now Ramos has a chance to take on the No. 12 seed Dolgopolov.
Dolgopolov has made a habit of interspersing terrible results with good ones. The Ukrainian made the quarters in Winston-Salem, the round of 16 at the US Open and the semis in Metz. Last week, he lost in the first round to Flavio Cipolla in Beijing. He should be well-rested for Shanghai. Expect a quick win for Dolgopolov.
Jurgen Melzer (14) vs. Santiago Giraldo
World No. 20 Jurgen Melzer had a good start to the 2011 season; he had particular success during the European clay-court swing. He hasn’t been as solid on hard courts. He made the quarterfinals in Kuala Lumpur, but he only won one match there against Rik De Voest.
Santiago Giraldo of Colombia has had some surprisingly good results this fall. He had wins over Robin Haase and Dmitry Tursunov in Tokyo last week and a win over Dudi Sela in Bangkok.
Prediction – Melzer is higher ranked, but Giraldo is in better form at the moment. Giraldo for the upset.
