American Mardy Fish will need to be on his game right away at the Shanghai Masters. Fish will take on the up-and-coming Bernard Tomic on Tuesday.
Bernard Tomic has already given Mardy Fish a run for his money during this year’s Asian swing. The two men met last week in Tokyo, where Fish narrowly won 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1.
Tomic, who is ranked 49th in the world and called the next great hope of Australian tennis, has had a breakthrough year in 2011. The Australian came through qualifying at Wimbledon and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before going out to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
Fish is having a great year of his own. The world No. 9 was also a Wimbledon quarterfinalist, but unlike Tomic, Fish had a fantastic summer hard-court season. The American is looking to qualify for the year-end tournament in London with his performance this fall.
Tomic has the kind of game that can frustrate just about any opponent. He has made an art form of sapping pace from the ball. The youngster will definitely have a shot at the upset if he can lure Fish into making a host of unforced errors.
Prediction – Fish has the year end tournament to play for; that should give him extra motivation to go far in Shanghai. The American in another tough three-setter.

Roddick was asked about this on SKY, considering the players voted Shanghai the best tournament of all. He says it's because there is a lot of sponsorship around the grounds and that the players are well looked after.
It could be the cost of the tickets or that people can't take the time off work. I can't remember if it's always been like this. In Dubai, I know they sell all the tickets for both the men and the women but the stadiums are empty throughout the working hours and packed at night because you get one ticket for the whole day. I tried to get tickets for the WTA tournament when I was there because the place was deserted every day and they said they were sold out.

Yes wow for the win by Tomic, to beat a top ten guy while still a teenager. Is he the first teenager to do so after Rafa? or maybe after Murray, Nole and Delpo?
Yes deuce, he's definitely a cool and calm boy, unlike Murray. I really like the way he plays, uses the court so well, throws in all kinds of shots with different pace, all sorts of varieties. Like what Robie Koenig said, Tomic does not hit with power but yet his shots are deep, penetrating and precise. He understands the game so well for his age, his weakness is his movement.
To me Dimitrov may have the flair, but Tomic has the better tennis accumen and he's such an intelligent player, and I value a good tennis brain over flair, which is why I like players like Rafa, Murray, Simon and now Tomic.

lucky, I've really, really liked him ever since Wimbledon and I agree with everything you say about him. Am following him with gr8 interest. Also like Dimitrov too though, do like the way he moves round the court. I think he needs to get some muscle, which will help his game, looks too long and lanky at the mo. Two such different young players coming up fast, what a treat we're in for :)

For some reason, I have not been able to warm to Tomic. I don't like his game and find him frustrating to watch. I saw his match with Fish in Japan and it was interesting. He took control in the first set and had Fish out of his comfort zone. Fish simply did not know how to handle his shots. Then Fish got a break and won the second set. The third set wasn't competitive and Fish won easily. The commentators spoke about Tomic's lack of fitness as the reason why he wasn't able to be competitive in that third set. For me, he is still a mystery, an enigma. His tennis is funky and different. I can see how he throws off his opponents, who don't seem to know what he is going to do next. There is potential with him, but for now I am just not able to get on board.

This is a good match, and the stadium is practically empty. :(
