Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo take the court as the Spaniard-heavy second quarter of the draw takes center stage at the Shanghai Masters.
Fernando Verdasco (16) vs. Zhe Li (WC)
Spain’s Fernando Verdasco left Beijing a few days ago on a sour note. The Spaniard was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by eventual champion Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals. He will look to turn around his fall season against Chinese wildcard Zhe Li.
The good news for Verdasco is that Li also had a wildcard last week in Beijing, where he failed to defeat another Chinese wildcard. Li will have the support of the crowd, but he is a Futures and Challenger level player. Even if Verdasco isn’t playing at his best, he should get through this match in straight sets.
Tommy Robredo vs. Stephane Bohli (Q)
Tommy Robredo, soon to be 30 years old, has slowly watched his ranking slip down to its current position at No. 46. The Spaniard has only won 1 match since Wimbledon, on the clay of Umag.
Robredo’s opponent will be Switzerland’s Stephane Bohli, who came up through qualifying. Bohli is ranked 247 in the world, but he may actually have a shot at beating Robredo, as he’s already played competitive matches on the courts in Shanghai.
Robredo will still have the edge, even though his form has been dreadful of late, but don’t be surprised if Bohli pulls off the upset.
