Janko Tipsarevic will kick off his Shanghai campaign on Tuesday against Feliciano Lopez. David Nalbandian is getting back on the court for a second-round date with Florian Mayer.
(9) Janko Tipsarevic vs. Feliciano Lopez
Tipsarevic and Lopez will be squaring off for the sixth time in their careers when they clash in round one of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Tuesday afternoon. Almost every one of their previous encounters has been competitive, but Lopez leads the head-to-head series 4-1--including 3-0 on hard courts. They most recently faced each other at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where Lopez survived 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).
The edge in current form, though, clearly goes to Tipsarevic. With an impressive 44-21 record for his 2011 campaign, the Serb is up to No. 13 in the world. He reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals and captured his first ATP title earlier this month in Kuala Lumpur. Lopez is a solid 30-23, but he has not advanced to a quarterfinal since July and he is coming off a second-round loss to Mikhail Youzhny in Beijing. The 28th-ranked Spaniard has a chance if he serves well, but Tipsarevic in three sets is the pick.
(WC) David Nalbandian vs. (15) Florian Mayer
Nalbandian and Mayer will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers and for the first time in six years when they take the court for second-round action on Tuesday. Their previous meetings came in 2004 and 2005, with Nalbandian dominating both times. Mayer, though, is a late-bloomer and he reached a career-high ranking of No. 18 in the world earlier this season (he now sits at 23rd). The German, who recently earned his first ATP title in Bucharest, is 40-23 for the year after destroying Fabio Fognini on Sunday.
While he cannot compete with Mayer's 2011 mark mainly due to injury, Nalbandian is at least a solid 20-11. The 29-year-old Argentine registers at 57th in the world, although he could be on the way up with a clean bill of health (he advanced seven spots thanks to a quarterfinal performance in Tokyo). Nalbandian opened in Shanghai on Monday with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Ernests Gulbis. Nalbandian's focus is surely already on the Davis Cup final against Spain, but he should be able to take this one in three sets.
