Australia’s Bernard Tomic got a tricky first round opponent in the big-serving South African, Kevin Anderson.
Kevin Anderson currently sits at a career high of 31 in the world. The South African has had solid results all year long, with a win at his home tournament in Johannesburg and an impressive quarterfinal showing at the Miami Masters.
Anderson comes into Shanghai off a quarterfinal exit at the China Open. He had a solid first round win over Andy Roddick before going out to eventual finalist Marin Cilic.
Bernard Tomic created great buzz this season at Wimbledon. After qualifying, the Australian advanced all the way to the quarterfinals before going out to Novak Djokovic.
Tomic didn’t perform well for most of the rest of the summer. The Australian youngster failed to win more than a match at a time until just last week in Tokyo, where he made the quarterfinals.
The surface in Shanghai should favor Anderson, whose big serve can blow opponents off the court on faster surfaces. Expect Tomic to employ his usual tactic of changing up the pace of the match, but Anderson’s serve should give him the win.
