A marquee matchup in Shanghai will feature David Nalbandian and Ernests Gulbis in opening-round action. The winner advances to face Florian Mayer.
David Nalbandian and Ernests Gulbis will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they do battle in the first round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Monday afternoon. Their only previous encounter came at the 2008 Indian Wells Masters, where Nalbandian prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4).
Both players are in decent but unspectacular form. Nalbandian advanced to round three of the U.S. Open and followed that up with a Davis Cup singles win over Viktor Troicki. The veteran Argentine won two matches in Tokyo before succumbing to an on-fire Andy Murray in the quarterfinals, leaving his 2011 record at 19-11.
Gulbis managed to pick up one victory in Tokyo by outlasting Lukasz Kubot 7-5 in the third, but he promptly got blown out by Mardy Fish. The Latvian has not been quite as inconsistent as usual this season, but he also has not sustained any momentum. Having cooled off since winning the Los Angeles title, Gulbis is 18-19 on the year.
In other action, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Somdev Devvarman will battle for the right to play Rafael Nadal in round two. They have already faced each other three times in 2011, with Devvarman leading the series 2-1. Garcia-Lopez scored a win in Houston before Devvarman got revenge in another clay-court match in Belgrade and then rolled on the grass courts of Eastbourne.
Based on current form, both Nalbandian and Devvarman should emerge victorious on Monday.
