10/7/11 2:57 AM | Cheryl Murray
The top 4 seeds of the Japan Open draw will be in quarterfinal action on Friday, with the bottom half featuring Andy Murray and David Ferrer.
Andy Murray (2) vs. David Nalbandian
This is one of the more intriguing matches on tap for Friday. David Nalbandian is currently ranked 64 in the world, but at any given moment he and his world-class backhand are capable of playing like a top 10 player. Unfortunately for the Argentine, those times don’t happen as frequently as they used to.
Murray also has a fine backhand and decidedly better movement than Nalbandian. The indoor courts suit both players. Nalbandian plays with more pace, Murray with more touch and much better consistency. Murray owns a slight 3-2 edge over the Argentine.
Both men can be shot-makers, but Murray’s arsenal is more dependable than Nalbandian’s. The Scot for the win in 3.
David Ferrer (3) vs. Radek Stepanek (7)
This is the first tournament for David Ferrer since his round of 16 ouster at the US Open at the hands of Andy Roddick. The Spaniard was recovering from a wrist fracture then, but he looks fit and ready to go for the Asian swing.
He will take on the wily veteran Radek Stepanek in his quarterfinal match. Stepanek’s ranking is up from 60 in the world just this June, thanks to a solid summer hard court swing. He was the surprise title winner in Washington and he made the round of 16 in Cincinnati.
Stepanek plays a highly aggressive brand of tennis that can be frustrating for opponents, but Ferrer is patient and hits a competent enough passing shot that Stepanek’s trips into net shouldn’t be overly bothersome.
Prediction – Ferrer is 2 tight sets.
