  • Murray, Ferrer in Tokyo round 2 action

    10/6/11 3:30 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray, Ferrer in Tokyo round 2 action No. 2 seed Andy Murray and No. 3 seed David Ferrer take the court at the Japan Open on Thursday.

Andy Murray (3) vs. Alex Bogomolov Jr.

American Alex Bogomolov, at 28 years of age, is having the best year of his professional career. He is ranked at a career high of 38th in the world right now, on the strength of a solid summer hard-court swing which included a semifinal showing in Los Angeles.

Depending on his results this autumn, Andy Murray is poised to take over the No. 3 spot from Roger Federer. The US Open semifinalist just won the event in Bangkok.

This match is of particular interest because Murray and Bogomolov have already met twice in 2011 – and they split the wins. The American defeated Murray in straight sets at the Miami Masters; Murray returned the favor at the Cincinnati Masters.

Prediction – Bogomolov was fortunate to play Murray when his form was off earlier this year. He won’t be as lucky this time around. Murray in straight sets.

David Ferrer (3) vs. Matthew Ebden

David Ferrer’s match against Australia’s Matthew Ebden should prove to be a straightfoward affair for the Spaniard. Ebden is ranked 137th in the world, and he was knocked out of Kuala Lumpur last week in the first round by Belgian David Goffin, who sits at 276th in the world.

Ferrer and his world-class return game should make short work of Ebden. Ferrer in straight sets.
