Former world No. 9 Marin Cilic will attempt to reach the round of 16 in Beijing as he faces Fabio Fognini of Italy. The players are set for their third career meeting Thursday afternoon.
Marin Cilic vs. Fabio Fognini
World No. 25 Marin Cilic looks to break a 1-1 series tie with world No. 39 Fabio Fognini on Thursday. The two are meeting for the first time on a hard court.
Cilic opened his China Open bid with a 6-2, 6-0 win over hometown wildcard Di Wu. The 23-year-old looks to reach his first hard-court quarter since February, when he finished runner-up in Marseille.
Fognini earned a first-round victory against lucky loser Grega Zemlja, 6-4, 6-1. The 24-year-old remains on track to book his first hard-court quarterfinal of the season.
Prediction: Cilic in straight sets.
Kevin Anderson vs. Albert Montanes
World No. 31 Kevin Anderson began the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 upset of 6th seed Andy Roddick. The 25-year-old is bidding for his first quarterfinal appearance since Atlanta.
World No. 55 Albert Montanes took out lucky loser Paul Capdeville in the first round, 6-3, 6-3. The 30-year-old veteran looks to make his first hard-court quarterfinal in 2011.
Prediction: Anderson in straight sets.

Just can't believe how badly Cilic can play, wins the first set and 4-1 up in the second, and he still can lose the second set 6-7, after having match point! How to progress like this?? His game is so up and down and he makes all sorts of funny shot selections. Really don't know what's he thinking. Fognini's serves aren't on fire but he's smart enough to take advantage of Cilic's up and down game.

Finally, Cilic wins. I hope he plays better than this going forward.
Cilic is now 23 yo, he certainly grows up nicely into a fine young man now, still rather sweet looking and adorable.

Oh, I missed the match, but happy for the win. I just don't know what happens to him sometimes. He has to find some consistancy in order to progress. I think he loses confidence too easily, but I do think he's a sweety.

Well at least Cilic managed to get a tough win. The point for him is to find a way to keep winning, even if he is not at his best. I don't know him and have not followed him enough to know exactly what is going on with him. We know that the talent and the game is there, but maybe it's something with mental strength that might be missing.
