Recent ATP World Tour title-winner Florian Mayer will be in round of 16 action, set to battle veteran Ivan Ljubicic. Feliciano Lopez is also on tap, looking to record a victory over Russian Mikhail Youzhny.
Florian Mayer vs. Ivan Ljubicic
World No. 22 Florian Mayer trails opponent Ivan Ljubicic 2-0 in the head-to-head series. Wednesday’s clash signals their first meeting in more than four years.
Mayer won his opening-round match against Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos, 6-2, 6-4. The 28-year-old German is bidding for his 40th match-win of the season.
Ljubicic was scheduled to face 7th seed John Isner in the first round, but the American pulled out with an abdominal strain. The 32-year-old defeated lucky loser Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Ljubicic looks to make his fifth Beijing quarterfinal.
Feliciano Lopez vs. Mikhail Youzhny
World No. 28 Feliciano Lopez holds a 4-1 series edge against Mikhail Youzhny. The two last met on the Challenger Tour in 2009, when the Spaniard recorded a straight-set victory.
Lopez began his tournament run with a straight-set win over qualifier Marsel Ilhan. The 30-year-old remains on track to reach his fifth quarterfinal in 2011.
Youzhny ousted 4th seed Nicolas Almagro in the opening round, 6-3, 6-2. The former China Open finalist will attempt to book his first quarter since early August, when he made the final four in Gstaad.
