Czech veteran Radek Stepanek and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will get things started at the Japan Open on Monday.
Radek Stepanek vs. Somdev Devvarman
Radek Stepanek was ranked No. 57 in the world as recently as July of this year, but a fantastic run to the title in Washington DC helped to bolster him all the way to his current ranking of No. 24. He will take on India’s Somdev Devvarman, who sits at No. 85 in the world.
Both men are at their best on quick hardcourts. Stepanek plays an ultra-aggressive style which brings him into net at every opportunity. Devvarman is good enough on hards to have a chance at the upset, but Stepanek should still advance.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez vs. Marco Chiudinelli
World No. 44 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, one of the Spanish Armada, will take on Swiss qualifier Marco Chiudinelli, ranked 237th in the world.
Due to his ranking, Chiudinelli is forced to spend his time either qualifying for main tour events or else plugging away on the Challenger tour, where he’s enjoyed moderate success this year.
The one thing going for the Swiss is that Garcia-Lopez is a clay-courter who is not at his best on faster indoor courts. Chiudinelli also has the advantage of having played three matches in Tokyo already.
