A marquee first-round matchup in Tokyo features Mardy Fish and Ryan Harrison on Monday. Fish and Harrison met twice during the recent U.S. Open Series.
Mardy Fish and Ryan Harrison will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers and for the third time in less than three months when they do battle in round one of the Japan on Monday.
The two Americans faced each other in consecutive semifinals this summer, with Fish prevailing on both occasions. After Fish dominated 6-2, 6-4 in Atlanta, Harrison made it much more competitive one week later in Los Angeles but eventually succumbed 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(3).
While Fish and Harrison are at very different points in their careers, both men are in the midst of their best seasons. Fish, at 29 years old, is an awesome 39-18 for his 2011 campaign and he is up to No. 8 in the world--a serious contender to reach the World Tour Finals. The veteran was on fire this summer with a title in Atlanta, runner-up showings in Los Angeles and Montreal, and a semifinal performance in Cincinnati.
Harrison has earned 13 of his 18 career ATP match victories this year. The 19-year-old advanced to the Indian Wells fourth round in addition to his stellar results in Atlanta and Los Angeles. Harrison, however, wrapped up the summer on a down note by losing to Marin Cilic in straight sets during first-round action at the U.S. Open.
Fish is obviously a huge favorite, but he has always been strong on U.S. hard courts and it remains to be seen how he will perform outside of that arena. Based on current form, Fish in straight sets is still the clear choice.
