Almagro, Isner begin Beijing campaigns Tournament seeds Nicolas Almagro and John Isner will open their China Open bids as they square off against respective opponents Mikhail Youzhny and Ivan Ljubicic. The players look to make the round of 16.

    (4) Nicolas Almagro vs. Mikhail Youzhny

World No. 11 Nicolas Almagro trails Mikhail Youzhny 3-0 in the head-to-head series. The two last met at Wimbledon, where the Russian recorded a four-set victory. Monday signals their first hard-court battle since 2008.

Almagro returns to play following a quarterfinal loss to Kei Nishikori in Kuala Lumpur. The 26-year-old Spaniard looks to win consecutive hard-court matches for the first time since Cincinnati.

Former China Open finalist Youzhny is 22-19 for the season. Prior to a successful effort against Brazil in Davis Cup, the Russian lost first-round matches in Canada, Cincinnati and the US Open.

    (7) John Isner vs Ivan Ljubicic

2010 China Open semifinalist John Isner enters into the tournament ranked a career-high World No. 18. The American improved his season record to 32-19, aided by a title-winning run in Winston-Salem and a quarterfinal finish at the US Open.

Former world No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic returns to competition after reaching the championship match in Metz. The veteran advanced to his 24th career final, where he fell to world No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Ljubicic has performed well in Beijing, having made the quarterfinals or better on four occasions.
