  • Murray takes on Simon for a spot in the Bangkok final

    10/1/11 5:52 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray takes on Simon for a spot in the Bangkok final Andy Murray will battle No. 3 seed Gilles Simon for a chance to make it to Sunday’s PTT Thailand Open final.

World No. 4 Andy Murray heads into this semifinal showdown against Gilles Simon with the confidence of a 7-1 record over the Frenchman, with Murray winning their last seven encounters.

Simon has already fallen victim to Murray three times in 2011, twice on clay and once on the hard courts of Cincinnati; Simon’s only set against the Scot came at the Madrid Masters.

Murray has played an efficient tournament, with especially impressive form against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Simon is also through to the semifinals, but he has beaten the likes of Yen-Hsun Lu and Matthias Bachinger.

Prediction – Murray should win this handily.

both wearing red, not too easy with the stream I've got. Solid opening game by simon with one really good rally.

muzz really firing too, wins an incredible point for 40-0, brilliant court coverage.

shaping up for a great match, 1-1.

muzz breaks for 3-2. seems really up for this one again, banging racquet with heal of hand rather than knuckles ;)

alex , 10/1/11 11:43 AM

... and serving like a machine. 6 games gone and firing 86% 1st serves! not the muzz i know ... can it last ???
anyone out there ? deuce ?? this is a rare display so far. muzz purring and send simon all over the place.

alex , 10/1/11 11:48 AM

2 breaks and 6-2 for a 24 minute 1st set. if muzz could only serve like that consistently he'd have won more than 1 slam by now.
well, nobody around so I'll be back later.

alex , 10/1/11 11:55 AM

Hi there - I'm tuning in right now. Simon has been a bit flaky all this week but he has a nasty habit of coming back from a set down. Fingers crossed Andy stays on fire.

hey ed - company:)
nice break there by simon. when he's had the chance he's been staying in the long rallies and even drawing errors from muzz - he can't beat muzz with that as a long-term tactic though surely. but he looks really uncomfortable when muxx draws him in with the droppers.

alex , 10/1/11 12:07 PM

Simon was not dubbed a human blackboard for nothing :-(

ed251137 , 10/1/11 12:10 PM

hadn't heard that one:) muzz just always has more shots than him and what simon does do well, muzz does better. must be quite disheartening for simon.

but wait, simon actually wins a net encounter to go 0-40 and then breaks muzz again. knuckles-on-strings time approaching for muzz.

alex , 10/1/11 12:23 PM

Gilles is a bit of a favourite of mine ;))

ed251137 , 10/1/11 12:31 PM

Andy looked a bit non-plussed after that set. The 3rd set promises to be a roller coaster.

ed251137 , 10/1/11 12:37 PM

They should have asked them nicely not to wear the same colours, it's hard to follow on computer.

Simon takes the 2nd set but Murray will win in the end.

nadline , 10/1/11 12:38 PM

simon takes the set as muzz ends two more long rallies with UFEs. well, i'd rather see muzz actually going for more winners, so can't complain. shaping up for a nice 3rd.
muzz serve went back down to the 50s where it seems to belong in set 2 :-(

alex , 10/1/11 12:40 PM

muzz breaks early ... but can he hold? :)

alex , 10/1/11 12:46 PM

Serving for the match!!!

ed251137 , 10/1/11 1:08 PM

Last comment a bit premature but as he is about to break Simon it comes to the same thing.

ed251137 , 10/1/11 1:11 PM

Fabulous match.

ed251137 , 10/1/11 1:22 PM

simon dogfights back from 5 match points but still loses. poor simon, just about everything he does is almost as good as muzz but not quite ... right down to the way he berates himself:)
well done muzz. young won't be easy but just a pity monfils is out.

alex , 10/1/11 1:27 PM

alex, ed, couldn't watch, busy, but just tuned in for result. seems like an excellent match, but as you say, alex, everything Gilles does, Andy does better!
Come on Andy! Every 250 counts towards no 3!

deuce , 10/1/11 2:51 PM

I think we can chalk in 250 points down for Bangkok for Murray, I don't see Young beating him again anytime soon.
