  • Monfils battles American Young in Bangkok semis

    10/1/11 6:03 AM | Cheryl Murray
Monfils battles American Young in Bangkok semis France’s Gael Monfils will take on Donald Young, who has been surging up the ATP rankings.

For years, Donald Young was talked about as the next big thing in American tennis. He was a successful junior but he had great difficulty transitioning to the main ATP tour, spending much of his professional career outside the top 100.

A trip to the Washington semifinals and a successful round of 16 showing at the US Open has bolstered Young’s ranking to 55th in the world.

The American has been impressive this week, with wins over Igor Andreev and No. 4 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and a quarterfinal drubbing of Go Soeda.

Gael Monfils is likely to be a much more difficult task for Young. The Frenchman is No. 9 in the world; he played solid tennis in the quarters against Jarkko Nieminen to win in straight sets.

    Prediction – Monfils in 3.

Young just beat Monfils in 3 sets. Murray or Simon next in the final.

Great job by Young. Kept hanging in and didn't get down on himself even at 1-4 in the third.
