Janko Tipsarevic and Nikolay Davydenko are set for a blockbuster quarterfinal in Kuala Lumpur on Friday. Marcos Baghdatis and Jurgen Melzer will also battle for a semifinal spot.
(3) Janko Tipsarevic vs. (5) Nikolay Davydenko
Tipsarevic and Davydenko will be squaring off for the third time in their careers when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open on Friday. Davydenko won each of their previous two encounters; 7-6(6), 6-1 at the Moscow indoor event in 2007 and 6-2, 6-1 one year later in Miami. Tipsarevic, though, is a much different player now. The third-seeded Serb is up to No. 17 in the world thanks to a 41-20 record for his 2011 campaign, which includes a recent quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. Open.
Davydenko, on the other hand, seems to be wearing down at 30 years old. The Russian is just 22-20 for the season and he is toiling down at No. 36 in the rankings. Nonetheless, he is showing signs of righting the ship with straight-set victories in Kuala Lumpur over Ryan Harrison and Lukasz Kubot. This should be a hard-hitting battle royale from the baseline. Despite their past history against each other, current form points to a three-set win for Tipsarevic.
(WC) Marcos Baghdatis vs. (4) Jurgen Melzer
Baghdatis and Melzer will be going head-to-head for just the second time in their careers when the clash during quarterfinal action on Friday. Their only previous encounter came early this year at the Australian Open, where Melzer led 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1, 4-3 when Baghdatis retired. The 60th-Cypriot could be ready to turn the tide despite a lackluster summer, as he has already scored straight-set wins this week over Alex Bogomolov and Somdev Devvarman.
Melzer has been similarly mediocre in 2011, owner of a 20-19 match record to Baghdatis' 23-22. The 30-year-old Austrian has dropped to No. 21 in the rankings and he has won just two of his last six matches. Melzer, though, kicked off his Kuala Lumpur campaign on Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Rik De Voest. This could go either way, but Baghdatis in three sets is the pick.
