Nikolay Davydenko abuses Ryan Harrison's serve and sprints into the Kuala Lumpur second round on Tuesday. Next up for Davydenko is Lukasz Kubot.
Nikolay Davydenko broke serve a whopping seven times in nine tries as he crushed Ryan Harrison 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Malaysian Open on Tuesday evening. Davydenko converted seven of 11 break chances while advancing after one hour and 28 minutes of play.
Even when he served at 73 percent in the opening set, Harrison was still hopeless on serve. The 19-year-old American won only nine of 22 first-serve points and was broken on four occasions. Harrison managed to earn two breaks of his own, but Davydenko ended the set in appropriate fashion with another scalp of his opponent's serve at 5-3.
More of the same continued in the second, with Harrison struggling to win points on both first and second serve. Davydenko added three more breaks, so it mattered little that he dropped his own serve once. The 30-year-old Russian wrapped up the proceedings with one last break at 5-2.
Harrison put 63 percent of his first serves while winning a hard-to-believe 38 percent of his first-serve points. Davydenko struck just one ace and double-faulted five times, but his return game easily made up for any service woes.
Kuala Lumpur's No. 5 seed will battle Lukasz Kubot for a quarterfinal spot. Kubot dismissed Lukas Rosol 6-3, 6-3.
