  • Baghdatis, Devvarman battle for Kuala Lumpur QFs

    9/27/11 6:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Baghdatis, Devvarman battle for Kuala Lumpur QFs Marcos Baghdatis and Somdev Devvarman will be in action on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur. Dmitry Tursunov and David Goffin are also looking for a place in the quarterfinals.

(WC) Marcos Baghdatis vs. Somdev Devvarman

Baghdatis and Devvarman will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers and for the third time this season when they clash in the Malaysian Open second round on Wednesday evening. All three of their previous encounters have come on hard courts, with Baghdatis leading the head-to-head series 2-1. Devvarman evened the score at one win apiece by prevailing 7-5, 6-0 in Indian Wells earlier this year before Baghdatis got revenge with a 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 victory in Washington.

Both men struggled throughout the summer. Baghdatis endured a flurry of tough losses to John Isner during the U.S. Open series, but the world No. 60 advanced one round last week in Metz and took out sixth-seeded Alex Bogomolov in straight sets on Monday. Devvarman is right at .500 with a 19-19 record for his 2011 campaign, just as Baghdatis is 22-22. India's top-ranked player ended a four-match losing streaking by defeating Mikhail Ledovskikh on Tuesday. Look for Baghdatis to reach the quarterfinals after two competitive sets.

    (7) Dmitry Tursunov vs. (WC) David Goffin

Tursunov's comeback from injuries that plagued him in 2009 and 2010 continues on Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur. The veteran Russian is back up to No. 41 in the world and he owns a decent 14-11 record for the season. He kicked off his fall campaign with a three-set win over Paul Capdeville on Monday.

Next up for Tursunov is Goffin, who earned his second career ATP match victory by taking out Matthew Ebden in straight sets during first-round action. The 20-year-old Belgian, who spends almost all of his time in Challengers and qualifying, registers at No. 276 in the world. Goffin appeared to struggle physically against Ebden, so count on Kuala Lumpur's No. 7 seed prevailing in straights.
