  • Baghdatis takes on Bogomolov in Kuala Lumpur opener

    9/25/11 4:07 PM | Ricky Dimon
Baghdatis takes on Bogomolov in Kuala Lumpur opener All three wild cards will be in action on Monday in Kuala Lumpur. The opening-day headliner features Marcos Baghdatis and Alex Bogomolov.

    (6) Alex Bogomolov vs. (WC) Marcos Baghdatis

Bogomolov and Baghdatis will be squaring off for the second time in their careers at the ATP level and for the first time in five years when they clash in the Malaysian Open first round on Monday. They faced each other at the 2006 Miami Masters, with Baghdatis prevailing 6-2, 6-4. Now, however, Bogomolov has a clear edge in current form. The veteran American is up to No. 40 in the world as of Sunday afternoon thanks to an 18-14 record for his breakout 2011 campaign.

Baghdatis struggled throughout the entire U.S. Open Series and he heads into Kuala Lumpur with a modest 21-22 record for the season. The 60th-ranked Cypriot, though, advanced one round in Metz before losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov in three sets. Bogomolov may be playing better tennis, but it remains to be seen if he can keep up his hot streak outside of the United States. Look for Baghdatis to score a tight three-set victory.

(WC) David Goffin vs. (WC) Matthew Ebden

Wild card entries Goffin and Ebden will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers at the ATP level on Monday in Kuala Lumpur. They squared off at a 2010 Challenger event in Loughborough, Great Britain and Ebden outlasted his opponent for a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win. Ebden has earned six of his seven career ATP match victories this year, including quarterfinal appearances in Brisbane and Newport.

Goffin, three years younger than Ebden at 20, has contested just two ATP-level matches. They came during the first week of 2011 in Chennai, where the Belgian beat Somdev Devvarman before losing to Stanislas Wawrinka. Like the Australian, Goffin has spent most of his time at the Challenger level and in ATP qualifying. This could go either way, but Ebden should have an advantage on indoor hard courts so look for him to advance in three sets.
